"Foundry Relationships:  The Lifeblood of a Fabless Business Model"

Ever since TSMC opened it’s doors as a dedicated, independent Semiconductor Manufacturing company, the fabless semiconductor business model has been gaining momentum, with even some long standing Integrated Device Manufacturers opting for a "fab-lite" or "full fabless" strategy.

However, with deep submicron CMOS process technologies becoming increasingly complex and expensive to develop, the fabless industry goal of having vendor neutral mask sets seemed to be  moving further and further from being practical----until the formation of GLOBALFOUNDRIES.

So, will fabless companies have true second sources in very advanced technologies?  Will there be alternatives to "sole source" suppliers to ensure the foundry acts in "good faith"?  Is it a necessity to design for a true "second source" even with the associated time, effort and expense? Can FPGA's offer limited second source functionality?  Will the foundry community work together to guarantee mask level second source compatibility without pressure from the user community?  Should fabless companies use foundry specific IP blocks in their designs at all?

Jason Gorss of GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Michael Krause of AMD will discuss these, real world experiences from a user’s viewpoint and all participants will share their own company's experiences to provide a note of real-world caution.

Please join us in Toronto to gain better insight into a complex subject and enjoy valuable networking time with your colleagues in an informal sharing of best industry practices.
