Featuring John Lutz, President of IBM Canada
June 20, 2012 at the Toronto Marriott Bloor Yorkville Hotel
In its short history, ICT has repeatedly demonstrated its capacity to assist humanity to meet modern challenges - from ending global conflicts to exploring space to mapping the human genome. And as technology evolves, its capacity for aiding in the solution of seemingly unsolvable problems grows more and more likely. This is fortunate because the complexity of the problems we face also seems to grow. Think of climate change, water conservation and management, sustainable food sources to end hunger. Think of building more efficient and safer cities. These challenges are huge. Big data, which implies supercharged processing capacity sufficient to deal with massive and unmanageable data sets, is seen by many as the key to analyzing and finding solutions.
In April, IBM, the Governments of Canada and Ontario and a consortium of seven universities, led by the University of Toronto and Western University, announced the creation of a $210 million research initiative to address some of these challenges within our cities, healthcare, water and energy management systems. The research will be underpinned by key infrastructure investments including the establishment of high performance and agile computing hubs, as well as a data centre in Barrie, Ontario. The initiative will also create opportunities for small- and medium-sized Canadian companies to collaborate.
IBM Canada's President John Lutz will be the featured guest at our next Board of Governors dinner on Wednesday, June 20, 2012. John will describe how big data and analytics are essential elements for Canada's competitiveness, and how the collaborative research arising from IBM Canada Research and Development Centre will contribute to Canada's innovation agenda.
