The Government of Canada is currently conducting consultations on Lawful Access and National Security – including powers and tools introduced in the former Bill C-51. You can view the government’s consultation document here.
Key issues for Canada’s technology industry include (see pg. 18 of the consultation document):
- Law enforcement access to basic subscriber information
- Legality of law enforcement communication intercepts
- Encryptionand potential legal procedures to require decryption
- Data retention and storage of telecommunications information – including operations beyond the reach of Canadian law.
ITAC will be hosting an ITAC Member in-person consultation or via teleconference session with officials from the Departments of Public Safety, Justice, and Innovation Science and Economic Development in Ottawa on November 1st from 11:00-12:30.
