ITAC 18th National Executive Forum
Co-hosted by CMC Microsystems
"Microsystems: Embedded Software + Hardware
Transforming the Innovation Landscape"
Wednesday, Oct. 10 (evening) and Thursday Oct. 11, 2012
Hyatt Regency, 370 King Street West, Toronto
Transistor densities have reached such high levels that even the smallest chips have significant amounts of processing power. Performance advantages and features are often enabled by a range of complementary micro-technologies. End product lifetimes continue to be short and the ability to refine functionality by reprogramming chips becomes a key advantage in coping with fast changing markets. Creative use of programmable microsystems that integrate these technologies provides a competitive advantage to companies worldwide.
Even traditional analogue chips are being designed with programmability in mind so it is no surprise that many Fabless semiconductor companies employ more embedded software engineers than circuit and digital designers Are hardware technology roadmaps software ready? ! Is embedded software the real driver for microsystems innovation?
But, will this trend continue or will there be a new trend that will overtake even the current business models?
Will the next big breakthrough in productivity come from EDA companies which see an opportunity in automating the generation of microcode or will expert systems capture product specifications and create any imaginable functionality to run on a universal embedded processor chip?
Will our industry be held back by a lack of skilled embedded software designers for devices and systems or will universities rise to the challenge? Will Canada have a leadership role in creating new courses that attract young people into our industry?
Can Canadian engineers and scientists impact design and manufacture in domains as varied as BioHealth; Transportation (Aerospace and Automotive); and Information and Communications Technologies?
This year the CMC Microsystems Annual Symposium and the ITAC Executive Forum will cooperate to provide a full day's content for discussion on trends, research, applications and commercialisation.
So, mark your calendars today and join us for the Awards Banquet, cast your vote for the next recipients, meet Texpo winners and enjoy a full day of stimulating discussion and excellent networking at the 18th annual Executive Forum and CMC Annual Symposium.
Special thanks to the confirmed members of the Organising Committee:

"Embedded Hardware and Software – saved by a common language?" George Bernard Shaw once said: 'England and America are two nations divided by a common language. Is this especially true of hardware and software engineers? If so, can a shared EDA platform bring these 2 solitudes together – or at least be the starting point for developing a shared language? As a worldwide leading EDA supplier, Synopsys has invested heavily over the past 5 years in embedded software and hardware solutions targeting semiconductor and microsystems communities worldwide. Insight into these key topics will be presented. |
| 2:40 PM |
"Embedded Software – the Driver for Microelectronics?" Since its founding in 1990, over 20 billion ARM-based chips have shipped to date, making ARM the most successful IP provider to the Microelectronics ecosystem. So, would it be surprising if ARM credited all of the embedded software developers that have written billions of lines of code with their success? How have ARM been successful and are there any lessons for the Fabless semiconductor community? This presentation will provide an overview of ARM and ARM's technology to provide some insight in the way an IP company views embedded software. |

Networking Break |
| 3:40 PM |
The Embedded Software Challenge Whether we're talking about the latest smart phone, in-car entertainment system or medical device, features that nobody imagined would be part of today's embedded systems are driving this competitive marketplace. The backbone to this feature frenzy is embedded software. With the number of lines of embedded code at an all-time high, electronics manufacturers are facing a new set of challenges. This presentation looks at key embedded software security and reliability concerns, addresses developing software for multicore platforms and discusses the tools available to help embedded software developers ensure code quality.

| 4:20 PM |
Is a Universal Embedded Processor all you need? In the desktop world, processors from Intel and AMD have promised the ability to replace dedicated SoCs including hardware accelerators like Graphics Processors – and yet that has not yet happened. But, in the embedded space, is the key challenge to design the ultimate General Purpose Processor or for software engineers to exploit the awesome processing power of existing hardware accelerated ICs?
