Bell Employs Bold
Moves to Stem Talent Loss in IT
"As a business that relies heavily on innovation, Bell is keenly aware how
difficult it is to recruit the best resources in this industry,"
says Stéphane Boisvert, President of Bell Canada Enterprise
business. "Our pool of talent is declining. Falling enrolment in IT
programs is now forcing companies to take more intensive, drastic
measures to recruit the best talent. The problem is national in
scope, and it requires a strong, concerted reaction. To turn the
tide, we are going to need determination, a strategic plan, and
leadership from both the private and public sectors."

Educating the
Next Generation of Canadian IT Leaders: A Shared Responsibility
The ICT industry is full of companies who are
making a conscious effort to address the declining interest in ICT
as a career. They are doing this by taking their message directly to
young Canadians. Nortel is a great example of this approach. The
company runs its own programs like Nortel LearniT, which is Nortel’s
key initiative aimed at educating students and teachers about the
positive influence digital technologies can have on learning.

Raising In Italics: How to build a robust talent pool
TECH WE LIKE:
Here's a contribution - appropriate to this Education
issue of ITAC Online -
from ITAC Director David Ticoll regarding a new report from the British ICT
sect oral council: "E-skills UK, the British sector council for the ICT
industry, recently published Now We Are 5," an online report on its
accomplishments of its first five years in existence. The format is an
online "flickable" book that's user friendly, well executed, and effectively
multimedia. It exemplifies powerful technology wedded to people-centric
design. In a mere five years, e-skills UK has implemented an impressive
array of real world programs to turn the ICT labour market around - programs
that we in Canada ought to learn from." If you encounter a new technological
innovation that you think is noteworthy please share it with us by sending a
link or illustration and a brief explanation of why you like it to jgrosse@itac.ca.
If we use your contribution we will send you something useful from the ITAC
swag-bag.
