The federal Government is shifting resources from indirect measures to direct programs for industrial support to drive Canadian innovation. Following the publication of the Jenkins Committee Report in late 2011 and in the Federal Budgets of 2012 and 2013, this change in orientation has had a large impact on the SR&ED program, displacing hundreds of millions of dollars for use in other areas and programs.
The next ITAC Strategic Microsystems Council Best Practice Forum, Karen Atkinson, Partner, Business Tax Services at Ernst and Young (and the Chair of ITAC’s Tax and Finance Committee) will present an overview of the changes. Representatives from government agencies including Taras Hollyer, Director, Program Policy and Innovation for Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, Angelo Del Duca, Ontario Director NRC IRAP and John MacRitchie, Regional Director, Ontario Centres of Excellence, will join us to discuss existing new and pending initiatives in industrial support that the microsystems community should be aware of. This forum will be of particular value to CFOs, CTOs and executives seeking a clearer understanding of opportunities for industrial support. While the focus will be on microsystems, all members of the ITAC community are welcome to attend. Seating is limited. Please register early.

The promise of Digital Wallets is that a consumer's payment cards, membership and loyalty cards, and even cash all "go digital", enabling a richer and more convenient shopping experience in stores and on-line. This promise, changing consumer behaviour and the convergence of channels and technologies are enabling Digital Wallets to take root in the payments landscape. Everyone, from multinational IT companies to wireless carriers to retailers, is trying to get a foothold in this promising market. Even start-ups are seeing the promise; just consider the rise of Square in the U.S. and Canada.
On April 16, Mike Bradley, Managing Director, NorthCard Inc., will kick off the ITAC Digital Commerce Executive Briefing Series on Digital Wallets. He will present a broad and comprehensive Executive Briefing covering:

With nearly 25 years' experience in the payments and electronic banking business, Mike works with leading North American retailers, technology companies, banks and card networks to develop strategies and drive key initiatives.
Most recently, Mike managed Visa's products in Canada. Mike drove the deployment of Visa's chip and contactless cards, new credit and debit products and innovation activities including mobile commerce trials and the launch of Visa's Digital Wallet. CMC Microsystems in collaboration with the National Research Council Canada (NRC) and The Quebec Institute of Graphic Communications (QIGC) are hosting the first Canadian Printed Electronics Symposium on April 9, 2013 at QIGC in Montreal.
Printed electronics is a practical technology useful for producing form-fitting connected surfaces. In the hands of a creative individual, the technology is a means to apply imagination to the transformation of surfaces into sensing, interacting interfaces exchanging information with the local environment. During the symposium we will explore these topics, market opportunities and technological progress and ideally reduce the risk for making related decisions.
Participants will leave with information-rich content that will explain potential applications and innovations in the PE industry.
Join in the Conversation
The Printed Electronics Symposium will be beneficial to print buyers, printers, manufacturers, the aerospace and automotive industries, academic researchers and various industry associations. Join in the conversation as major players from industry, academia and government present and showcase their innovations, products and technological advances, including:

All around the world seismic economic and demographic shifts are reshaping the design and delivery of public services. In countries like Spain and Greece these shifts are immediately discernible at street level. In places like Canada they are more subtle. For example by 2025 the portion of our population older than 65 will grow from 14 per cent to over 20 per cent, placing considerable pressure on healthcare and all our social benefit programs. For developed as well as developing nations, whether they are immediately visible or not, these pressures are urgent, requiring forward thinking government leaders to shift their thinking about all dimensions of public service delivery.
Economic modelling conducted by Oxford Economics for Accenture forecasts that meeting the burgeoning demand for services across all three levels of government will cost Canada an additional $93 billion per year by 2025.
Bernard le Masson, Managing Director, Management Consulting Health and Public Service for Accenture, has a wealth of experience assisting governments in delivering efficiencies in public service design and delivery. He recently led a five-year transformation project for the French Government that helped to remove $7 billion in annual costs. Based in Paris, Bernard will be in Canada in April to discuss his experiences and an important new Accenture study on government transformation. ITAC is pleased to welcome Bernard as our special guest speaker at our next Board of Governors Dinner on April 4, 2013. Please join us for some fresh insights on a pressing problem of critical concern to governments, ICT companies and citizens.

Understanding the healthcare system and those who work in it will help make you more effective in your work and more comfortable interacting with the wide range of clinicians, health administrators and other healthcare staff. Those who have not had the time or opportunity to participate in a relevant full undergraduate education program often find themselves lacking in this key area of knowledge. The online H4IT program is being offered to address this gap. H4IT introduces the Canadian healthcare system, the basic concepts associated with human health, and the nature and activities of the care process. The material is based on easy-to-understand cases and uses a successive refinement approach to presenting material. H4IT will enable you to understand what clinicians do, what health and sickness are all about and how care is delivered through our health system.

Public sector procurement has topped the list of issues impacting the vendor community for the past three years. Allocation of risk, terms and conditions, the inconsistent application of standards and other factors have converged to stifle innovation and increase the cost and risk of submitting proposals. This is a national challenge that covers procurements by governments and the broader public sector.
ITAC Health has made public sector procurement our top priority and is seeking your input into how to tackle this challenging issue. On March 21, 2013 ITAC Health is hosting a one-day workshop at the Hotel Intercontinental in Toronto. Join Auditor General for Ontario, Jim McCarter, a panel of government and health customers and a panel of vendors to explore the issues and challenges. Then participate in an interactive workshop to help define the industry’s position and ITAC Health’s go-forward action plan.

Greetings ITAC HR Forum Members:
The next ITAC HR Forum meeting is Tuesday, March 19th, hosted by HP Canada in Mississauga. Please mark your calendars accordingly!
An organization's capacity to develop effective leaders is recognized as one of the most important factors in achieving competitive advantage and profitability. However, recent estimates suggest that over 70% of organizations feel that their leaders do not have the capabilities necessary for future success. This leadership gap is critical.
The business environment today is complex and places increased expectations and demands on leaders. Many of today's IT organizations face the challenges of operating in global, matrixed and virtual environments, where the pace of change is rapid. This necessitates an increased need for team collaboration across function and geography. This environment requires a leader specifically skilled at leading teams.
Join us for an interactive session focused on how you can build leadership capacity for the future in a way that is meaningful, efficient and effective. This session will include: (1) an experiential activity designed to help you recognize the challenges of leadership; (2) a discussion around best practices in leadership development and specifically team leadership; and (3) a breakout group activity designed to help you consolidate and apply the principles discussed.

Download Martin Snelgrove's presentation on "Low Power: Analog - Partly Science" (PDF)
In spite of reduction in supply voltage and improved leakage control, power consumption has become a key performance specification/target in many electronic products – not just portable electronics. Reducing power consumption requires a broad multi-dimensional approach: system power management; energy efficient regulation; architectural optimization; on-die power management; BIG-Little processors; low-power implementation techniques (clock and power gating, multi-Vt, multi-channel libraries, leakage and dynamic power optimization), sleep modes, etc.
Are there any new concepts that offer the promise of even more significant power reduction? Is low Power design best handled by experienced designers or can CAD/CAD optimization tools create improved power-friendly designs? Are wafer foundries doing enough to enable low-power design through leakage control process control, etc.? And is the headroom running out on analog with elevated power densities in new processes and electrical effects squeezing traditional analog design?
The SMC of ITAC has convened a faculty of experts to explore power reduction and design in analog systems.

As a technology marketer, you may be teetering on the edge of the social media cliff: do you face uncertainty and move forward with your social media efforts, or back away and stay in the predicable zone of traditional marketing?
Blogging, tweeting and keeping on top of on-line communities, such as LinkedIn takes time and resources – both in short supply… and delegating these responsibilities to junior staff could be risky. Yet, social media is being touted as the ultimate in cost-effective lead generation. How do you balance stretched resources and a steep learning curve with pressure from the competition – and your manager – to stay ahead of the game?
Our impressive line-up of marketing leaders will share their social media experiences – what worked and what didn’t. How and when to use social media. And the critical elements of integrating the sales team.

Realizing the enabling potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is the theme of ITCH 2013. The conference will focus on impacts of ICT on healthcare delivery and personal health. We invite national and international papers that address one or more of the three broad characteristics of ICT that are realizing their enabling potential: Available, Tailored and Closer.
Considering key consultation issues, the conference begins with online and interactive services as alternative delivery mechanisms in general (the "availability"). Service navigation tools and personalized WebPages then lead to improved patient experiences (the "tailored"). TeleCare and TeleHealthCare focus on particular services best delivered remotely in patients' own homes (the "closer").
The conference aim is ambitious but achievable. On the horizon is an informed health ICT sector, with practitioners networked across organizations and integrated with a burgeoning research community. The focus is on Canada, learning from itself and from other countries – all in the international drive to realize the full potential of health ICT in practice.

Folklore has it that entrepreneurs are born not made, and not formally educated. Our industry has certainly contributed to this perception with many of our greatest company founders famously self-proclaimed college drop-outs.
Canada is lagging internationally in innovation and missing opportunities to exploit the power of ICT. What is the role of the university in supporting our ambition to build a strong innovation culture in Canada and to advance the digital economy? Can entrepreneurship be taught, and how can successful entrepreneurs be fostered? How can universities help drive technology adoption, particularly in SMEs? What does this educational experience look like? Ryerson University, Canada's comprehensive Innovation University, is committed to embedding innovation across its curriculum and expanding its unique approach to Zone education exemplified in its internationally recognized Digital Media Zone (DMZ).
Our next ITAC Board of Governors event will provide the opportunity for you to make that visit yourself. We will join DMZ staff, researchers and students at Ryerson for a special holiday season mash-up. There will be the usual ITAC networking (though we promise to drop the mean age at this event considerably) and the opportunity to hear from the Ryerson and DMZ leadership about what makes this model so promising. The evening will feature a panel discussion between DMZ Director Valerie Fox and three DMZ entrepreneurs on their aspirations, their experiences and on the advantages of graduating with both a degree and a business. The panelists are as follows:
![]() |
Lindsey Goodchild is the CEO and founder of Greengage, a company that started in the DMZ. As one of the first graduates from Ryerson's post-graduate program in Sustainability with a specialization in Corporate Responsibility, Lindsey brings a current and innovative perspective to the changing demands of corporate citizens. Greengage has allowed Lindsey to draw on her academic background and combine it with her enthusiasm for sustainability to develop enabling platforms that create and inspire change for a more sustainable world. She is passionate about helping companies improve their triple bottom line (profit, people, planet), along with proving that companies achieve both environmental and social benefits while lowering operating costs and improving their business. |
![]() |
Jaigris Hodson is a PhD student in Communications and Culture at Ryerson and is working on digital innovation process, particularly with respect to social media. Her work has included exploring the technology hype-cycle and ways to understand technology adoption processes. She is engaged in several projects related to social innovation and social enterprises as well as teaching in the Digital Specialization Program at Ryerson (http://www.digitalspecialization.ryerson.ca/). |

Hossein Rahnama conducts research in the DMZ that combines context-aware computing, artificial intelligence, and opportunistic social networking. With special interests in the transit, transport and security industries, Hossein's Flybits team specializes in mobile software solutions that respond to situational factors and personal information. Their goal is to use mobile devices to enhance interpersonal communications while conserving power and energy. In August 2012 it was announced that Rename was recognized as part of MIT's Technology Review magazine's annual list of the world's top innovators under the age of 35. |

The City of Toronto and IT World Canada have organized a 1/2 day morning session for a senior community leadership event on November 29th to rally leaders in our community that are concerned with the following facts:
However: Equity Crowdfunding in Canada is currently not legal.
Our estimates are that we are 2 years behind in the road to legalizing equity based crowdfunding.
Countries that allow Equity Crowdfunding include: Australia, UK, The Netherlands, Italy, and Sweden. The USA has created the legal framework for Equity based Crowdfunding and the full set of rules and regulations are set to be ready in 2013. FINRA has been identified as the USA securities regulator, and draft laws are in review.
In Ontario, the Ontario Securities Commission is presently reviewing the exempt market rules and equity based crowdfunding is one of the discussion items. Provinces like New Brunswick are in formulation discussions on new rulings, and Alberta will have a position in early 2013. Invest Crowdfund Canada has mobilized over 100 volunteers working these issues coast to coast - see iCANADA.nu for more information. Media coverage has been extensive, and more coming.
On November 29th, we are holding a 1/2 day session with industry leaders to focus on Equity Crowdfunding. There is no cost to attend, but you do need to register for the event
The Program:
Darren Westlake, CEO, is joining us from the UK to talk about CROWDCUBE's success in the UK, Andrea Johnson, Partner, Canada's top securities lawyer/expert on Crowdfunding will discuss the realities in Canada, and what we need to rally around to make these changes, Brian Koscak, Chair of the Accredited Dealer's Association will talk about the importance of evolving our laws to keep current in Canada, Peter Aceto, CEO ING Bank, a social media and finance market leader will discuss how banks can benefit from legalizing crowdfunding to support SMB's, Richard Reiner, serial entrepreneur, and Board of Director, Toronto Angel Group will discuss the relevance of CF to the angel community.
