What progress have Canadian provinces made in implementing digital health? Where is Canada overall in the deployment of electronic health records? Are we there yet? What could we be doing differently?
This two-session series will cover Canada’s approach to implementing a pan-Canadian electronic health record and the current state of development of digital health and the implementation of electronic health records in all provinces. The first session will focus on a standardized provincial eHealth strategic planning model which provide a common view of the key components of an eHealth strategy, and the supporting infrastructure that is required. The model will then be used to measure the status in each province of Canada using a quantitative strategy: measuring inputs (e.g. money and resources spent) and deriving and indicator of the current status. The result is a dashboard that illustrates clearly the progress in each province and for Canada overall. The limitations of this approach will be reviewed and a second methodology, focused on quality outcomes will be offered as an alternative approach.
The second session will provide a deep dive into one or more provinces and will highlight a guest speaker who will provide a critique of the methodologies and reflections of its application and “fit” in the province that is being reviewed. There will be an opportunity for all attendees to enter into the discussion, challenge the findings of the review and offer suggestions for improving the methods used and the findings and conclusions offered.
The sessions will be led by one of Canada’s leading eHealth experts, Roger Girard. Mr. Girard has been a CIO in many healthcare jurisdictions across Canada, and will use his practical experience which guided his development of the tools presented. As well, Roger will be joined by Susanne Flett, CEO of Healthtech Consulting who will provide expert commentary and input into the discussion. Other expert commentary sources may also be asked to join the discussion as the session date approaches.
