ITAC Speaks to Commons Committee on Privacy

ITAC Speaks to Commons Committee on Privacy

On May 16th, ITAC President, Robert Watson, and VP Government Relations and Policy, Andre Leduc, presented to the Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics and potential changes to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

ITAC’s remarks built on 2016 policy submissions looking at online reputation and modernizing consent under PIPEDA.

Watsons core message was that the government should maintain and expand the flexible, principles based approach to privacy set out in PIPEDA. Watson also noted that data has quickly become a key enabler across a range of sectors, and the committee needs to understand PIPEDA both as an important piece of consumer and economic legislation.
