New TRSM graduate program helps businesses ward off cyber threats
Ted Rogers School of Management launches new professional master’s diploma that provides management training for professionals involved in protecting organizations’ privacy and data security
A new professional master’s diploma program on data protection and security is launched at Ted Rogers School of Management.
Identity theft. Security breaches. Data security leaks. Companies, organizations and even individuals are regularly exposed to the risk of these online threats each time they share information or purchase a product over the Internet. In order to help businesses mitigate these online risks and protect consumers’ private information, Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM) has launched a new professional master’s diploma in information security.
The Enterprise Information Security, Privacy and Data Protection program will teach students the skills to serve as information security officers, technicians and analysts to safeguard their organizations from the threat of online cyber attacks.
Indeed, security data breaches are on the rise. According to U.S.-based industry body Identity Theft Research Center, the number of data breaches at organizations reached a record high of 783 in the U.S in 2014, up nearly 30 per cent from the previous year. As of November 2015, the center reported 690 data breaches and over 176 million records that have been exposed in the American banking, business, education, government and health-care sectors so far.
“Many companies don’t have good governance structures in place to handle any kind of data security breach effectively,” says Susan Calahan, manager of the graduate diploma program. “This new program is designed to provide information technology professionals the managerial and technical expertise to monitor and minimize any possible online threats to an organization.”
The program comprises four courses taught by top researchers and industry experts TRSM and Ryerson University’s Department of Computer Science. Students will be taught fundamentals in the operation and control of information security, security and privacy management. Students will also learn how to anticipate online risks and develop processes to effectively manage issues as they arise.
