This is a month to be PROUD!
While there are have been decades of breaking down barriers in the struggle for acceptance, I wanted to reach out today in the spirit of celebration, collaboration and support for the LGBTQ2+ community.
Diversity is at the core of what makes us unique and maybe even special – as an organization, an industry and community. We know it hasn’t always been this way. After all, it wasn’t until 2005 that Canada legalized same-sex marriage nationwide; and not until 2016 that our first sitting Prime Minister (Justin Trudeau) marched in the Toronto Pride Parade – the same year that June was officially declared Pride Month here in Canada.
And while we’ve come a long way, we still have a lot of work to do to ensure everyone is treated equally, at work and in life. This was echoed in yesterday’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold LGBTQ Rights. So let’s celebrate!
Pride Month is an opportunity for hundreds of thousands of individuals around the world (who can) to come together to celebrate the victories and to rally for the battles still being fought. This year’s celebration will have to be different from most; this would have marked Toronto’s 40th Pride Parade – but there will be virtual opportunities that I encourage you to look into. Pride Toronto, for example, is hosting its first Virtual Pride, using technology as a platform to showcase the diverse talents of its community members. Check it out here.
At TECHNATION, we sincerely make it a priority to take action, to create a safe and healthy work environment for all of us, and to celebrate the incredible and unique leaders from all walks of life. We create programs and policies that address diversity and inclusion all year long. If there are any policies you feel should be addressed, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
For a fulsome overview of Pride History – there are many resources available – I thought you might be interested in checking out this one here which provides a Canadian perspective.
Happy Pride Month!
