Federal National Security Review – Get Involved with ITAC

On September 7th, Minister Goodale and Public Safety Canada launched the federal National Security Consultations. This review will consider changes to Canada’s national security framework including powers and tools introduced in the former Bill C-51. You can read the news release here.

Important for ITAC members:

One of the core themes of the consultation is Investigative Capabilities in a Digital World (pg. 18 of the attached Green Paper ntnl-scrt-grn-ppr-2016-en  ) which includes major technology issues such as:

  • Law enforcement access to basic subscriber information
  • Legality of law enforcement communication intercepts
  • Encryptionand potential legal procedures to require decryption
  • Data retention and storage of telecommunications information – including operations beyond the reach of Canadian law.

Consultations are open until December 1st, 2016. ITAC will be developing a submission on behalf of Canada’s ICT industry.  If you or a member of your organization would be interested in participating please let me know at dmesser@itac.ca .
